The best thing about being a wedding photographer is the never-ending flow of clients. People are always getting married. You may find that the peak season is during the spring and summer, but you will have weddings to do year-round.
Here are some basics to think about when starting a wedding photography business:
- Create relationships with other wedding-oriented vendors and businesses. These include:
- Florists
- Bakeries
- Wedding dress shops and tuxedo rental shops
- Jewelers
- DJ’s
- Physical demands required of you
- Lugging equipment
- On your feet for long periods
- Bending and stooping
- A long work day
- Attire for photographers
- Should be comfortable (especially shoes!)
- Should be professional
- A suit and tie for men
- A dress or dressy pantsuit for women
- Eating and drinking
- Do not drink any alcoholic beverages during the wedding
- Only eat if you are invited to do so (which you usually will be). However, keep in mind that you should stay alert to any photo opportunities at all times and be ready to get important shots.
- Be ready to interact with all types of personalities
- Keep your sense of humor
- Always remain professional and courteous
- Make sure to follow the rules of the church
- Definitely get an assistant
- Family member or friend
- College or high school student
- Be sure to have back-up equipment
- extra camera
- extra flash
- extra batteries
- more than enough flash memory cards
- ALWAYS have a contract
