One of the most popular questions I'm asked is, "What lens should I use for my portrait photography?" While everyone has their preference, I believe the best choice for portraits is a short zoom lens in the 85-100 mm range. Why?

  1. They allow you a good working distance from your subject while still allowing you to fill the frame with your subject.
  2. They get rid of any unflattering facial distortion that can be caused with wider angle lenses.
  3. Zoom lenses are best because you won’t have to keep moving closer and further away from your subject if you want to recompose your shot.

Some lenses to check out are the 24-120mm and the 28-105mm, since they both cover the 85-100mm range.
