Instead of discussing the myriad pictures that make up a wedding album, I would like to analyze the elements a perfect wedding portrait. First, I think you would agree that the faces tell the main story and the emotions make it real. Important elements that add to the story are the rings, detail in the bridal gown and headpiece, the composition of the main centers of interest, and good portrait lighting.

In a medium close up portrait of a bride and groom, the area of the heads should take up no more than one fourth of the picture. Several poses present the possibility of the bride and groom holding hands with the rings showing. The groom can be positioned behind the bride and slightly above so that his hand placed on her shoulder can be reached by the bride’s hand in a natural motion. In this configuration, both faces are presented to the cameral while still taking advantage of a diagonal line through the eyes. Another pose that includes the hands is one in which the bride leans her head on the groom’s shoulder and places her hand on his hands around her waist. Make sure that both rings are visible. A pose that has the bride and groom looking at each other can present true profiles to the camera. An alternative is to have the bride and groom looking at the rings as he touches her hand. Take care that the chins are not tucked in. A strong back light provides illumination for the veil and an edge light for the groom’s face. Sufficient light must be provided for the faces so as not to appear too dark. The best facial expressions show their happiness without them smiling too hard or looking giddy. The eyes should follow the nose direction for a natural look. Lighting outdoors is most flattering when coming from the side. Direct sunlight should be avoided because of the high light to shadow ratios. Light at sunset may be perfectly balanced with a little help from a gold reflector. Indoors, a single 30 inch soft box creates a dramatic portrait with soft highlights. A white background keeps the tone airy and the faces from washing out. Capture it all for the happy couple.
